? Non-judgmental

CCC course really make us THINK..

During our social course, we will learn that social workers should be non-judgemental when seeing our clients. In client-centered therapy, it states that the therapist should be non-judgmental, and has positive self-regard for clients in order to attain a therapeutic r/s, and for the therapy to take effect.
But, how non-judgment can a human be?

Come to think of it, if social workers are human, it is very difficult to be totally non-judgmental or have positive self regards for every clients that they see. It is also quite difficutly to be 100% objective about the clients or the context.

Being human, it is natural for us to bring in our own values, beliefs, life experiences into the sessions. I think could not be really non-judgmental. I admit (with all my heart) that there are several patients whom I really cannot work with. No matter how I squeeze and squint my eyes, I can never see that positive side of that patient.
Thus, I think we can never be really really non-judgmental.

Rather, we could have self-awareness. Being aware of our own feelings, of counter transference, and on look out of instances when we are being too subjective or too domineering and impose our values on clients' etc..

So, self awareness!! =)

Mis-impression

Virginia Satir identified 5 different coping style in which persons handle their communication when under stress

1. Blamer.
Blamers try to gain strength and self esteem through the belittling
. Their main goal is to dominate and win. Their power lies in their guilt-producing abilities.

2. Placater.

Placating involves the effacing of one self. Belittling oneself, while inflating the other, may stop the other person's anger and result in earning favour in the eyes of another, often one's superior. Placaters always try to please; they often apologise and seldom disagree.

3. Super-reasonable.

Computer-like and unemotional, the super-reasonable have a strong need for controlling both self and others. These people rely on intellectualistion to deal with interpersonal situations. They receive power from pretending to know it all, thus making their audience appear ignorant. They give an outward appearance of being calm and collected, and are distrustful of emotions.

4. Irrelevant.
The irrelevant disbelieve
the possibility of gaining self worth through voicing their opinion and evade any confrontation, investing all energy in sidetracking. The words of an irrelevant communication seem unrelated to the context in which they appear. They use all kinds of strategies to avoid unpleasant encounters; anger, hurt and guilt are often used to manipulate others’ feelings

5. Congruent.
The goal is to achieve congruence communications. It has no contradictions between its layers. Congruent communicators share their thoughts and emotions about themselves without projecting them onto others and thus avoid manipulation.

It is nothing special that people see me as laid back, irrelevant.. .. However, it sometimes comes with negative connotation like no urgency, irresponsible, doing nothing, lazy, not serious etc...
How sad is it right? =(

I think I was terribly misunderstood during placement, when I was seen as not serious. Sorry to say that no matter how u see me, I am actually a responsible person ok??!!

Recently, we had another mass casualty exercise, and if i remember correctly, HBH commented that she expected me being an irrelevant, to be one of those who may turn up late for the exercise.. Hello.. I even came early leh..

Anyway, the point is that my laid back attitude could usually give people the wrong impression, and it is nothing unusual.

So conclusion, please don't judge me if you dun really know me.

Changes

There are many self-help books around teaching people how they should adapt to changes, view changes as part of their lifecycle, and not view changes as a threat.

Indeed, changes in life is inevitable. Its either we adapt to changes, or we will get left behind. I remember reading the same thing from Who Moved My Cheese, when the 2 mice went ahead to look for the new cheese, while the 2 men stayed behind to wait for the old cheese to reappear.

of course, more often den not, as human, we hate changes. Changes means new things to learn, new relationship to be form, new environment to be adapted.

I hates changes too. I still remember how upset I am when I got to know that I am no longer taking my 47. Its literally "heart sinking". But luckily, I still managed to hold on tightly to 10 beds at the ward, so that I can still haf the chance to go bitching with my staff nurses there..

anyway, since changes are inevitable, we shall try to adapt to the change, and make the best out of it!

i used to joke about how "good" the life of my employees will be, if i became the boss.
must leave office on the dot, early cut-off time for cases, sat will be solely documentation day..

today it suddenly dawned upon me that being the boss, you got to know your stuff, need to think quick, make decision fast.
Definitely not easy to be a boss. It takes someone with high calibre, a very board frame of mind, decisive, ability to guide ur subordinates etc etc etc etc.

I wonder whether all these qualities are in-born, or could be accquired through years of experience. I can't help to think that a person's premorbid personality, character will play a big part because it affect how one learn, and how one absorb the lessons learnt through experience.

I can't imagine how I could turn out to be in 5 years time.
Will I be able to think differently? Will I be able to make decisions during crisis?

接二连三

the more time Ling spent doing ICU cases, the more she can see "the trend". and this is verified by her dear supervisor.
cases in ICUs (so far SICU) has some trends:
it can be a period of similar reasons for admissions e.g. motorcyclists skidded (which is very common to us already), pedestrain knocked down by slow-moving vehicles (i got 2 patients which same admission date and admission time is only 2 hrs apart, and i really thought they are a couple. but they are not), sudden complaint giddiness/headache which actually turns out to be massive bleeding in the brain .
it can be a period whereby patients admitted to hospital, and happened to have similar family set-up

and cases are definitely seasonal. once it comes, it comes together. if not, the ward will be as quiet as a mouse.
even not-so-good luck also comes in pairs. once Ling had a case that dealt with the CS and CA, there comes another case. which means a total of 4 cases. eeks.

and the worse is that, when you got a major case, there goes all ur time, sacrificing other cases.
and the worst? to get a DO. (but thanks to kcw who offered to take that DO)

boo boo.

(ling was so overwhelmed that she didn't even reaslised that it is 25th today)

RIP

Ling's fav home tee-shirt finally retired yesterday night. She was in the midst of putting it over her head when she suddenly heard a "Tzzzt" sound. And the next moment, it became like this.

Look how sad is my tarepanda.

Ling's mum apparently is very happy about it, coz it meant one more old clothing to throw away. Ling's mum reminded her that this t-shirt is almost 9 years!! and it is really time for it to go.

true enuff. Ling wondered if she really was so poor that she only bought 1 PE tee during her JC years.
