CCC course really make us THINK..
During our social course, we will learn that social workers should be non-judgemental when seeing our clients. In client-centered therapy, it states that the therapist should be non-judgmental, and has positive self-regard for clients in order to attain a therapeutic r/s, and for the therapy to take effect.
But, how non-judgment can a human be?
Come to think of it, if social workers are human, it is very difficult to be totally non-judgmental or have positive self regards for every clients that they see. It is also quite difficutly to be 100% objective about the clients or the context.
Being human, it is natural for us to bring in our own values, beliefs, life experiences into the sessions. I think could not be really non-judgmental. I admit (with all my heart) that there are several patients whom I really cannot work with. No matter how I squeeze and squint my eyes, I can never see that positive side of that patient.
Thus, I think we can never be really really non-judgmental.
Rather, we could have self-awareness. Being aware of our own feelings, of counter transference, and on look out of instances when we are being too subjective or too domineering and impose our values on clients' etc..
So, self awareness!! =)
